Emmett Till: Black American, 14. Murdered in Mississippi for allegedly whistling at a white woman in 1955.
Willie Edwards: Black American husband and father, 24. Murdered by members of the Alabama Ku Klux Klan in 1957.
James Chaney: Black American, 21. One of three American civil rights workers who was murdered during Freedom Summer by members of the Ku Klux Klan near Philadelphia, Mississippi in 1964.
Michael Donald: Black American, 19. Murdered by two Ku Klux Klan members in Mobile, Alabama in 1981.
Michael Griffith: Black American, 23. He was killed after being hit by a car in Howard Beach in 1986. Griffith was chased onto a highway by a mob of white youths who had beaten him and his friends.
Yusef Hawkins: Black American, 16. Shot to death in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn (a predominantly white working-class neighborhood) in 1989. Hawkins and three friends were attacked by a crowd of 10 to 30 white youths, with at least seven of them wielding baseball bats. One, armed with a handgun, shot Hawkins twice in the chest, killing him.
James Byrd Jr: Black American, 49. Murdered by three men, of whom at least two were white supremacists, in Jasper, Texas in 1998. They dragged Byrd behind a pick-up truck along an asphalt road. Byrd, who remained conscious throughout most of the ordeal, was killed when his body hit the edge of a culvert, severing his right arm and head. The murderers drove on for another mile before dumping his torso in front of an African-American cemetery in Jasper.
Trayvon Martin: Black American, 17. Murdered after being racially profiled by a Neighborhood Watch for wearing a hoodie and walking while black in 2012.
